We Are Here To Protect Victims of Domestic Abuse No Matter What

you know that we continue to tackle domestic abuse safely, no matter what tier or restrictions we need to follow to slow the spread of Coronavirus.

We also want to remind people that there are ways to ask for police help in an emergency situation, even if you are unable to speak.

Our officers are still actively protecting victims and their families, and taking action against perpetrators. They are equipped with personal protection equipment (PPE) so that they can attend reports whatever the circumstances and speak to victims in the safest and most private way possible.

Temporary Detective Chief Inspector Brian Bilby of our Public Protection Unit said: “We understand that the restrictions necessary to combat Covid-19 are challenging to people who are in abusive relationships.

“If you are suffering from abuse and home is not a safe place for you, please don’t worry about the restrictions. It is important that you seek help if you are in danger.”
If you are in an emergency situation at home, but can’t speak, there is a process you can follow to let us know you need help.

It’s called the Silent Solution and this is how it works:
• All calls to 999 are directed to a BT operator, who will ask what service you need. If no service is requested, but anything suspicious is heard throughout the process, BT operators will connect you to a police call handler
• It’s always best to speak to the operator if you can, even by whispering. You may also be asked to cough or tape the keys on your phone in response to questions
• If making a sound would put you or someone else in danger and the BT operator cannot decide whether an emergency service is needed, your call will be transferred to the Silent Solution system. This is a police system which helps to filter out accidental or hoax 999 calls, but also assists those who genuinely need help but cannot or are unable to speak.
• A 20-second automated message will play, which will ask you to press 55 to be put through to a police call handler. The BT operator will remain on the line and listen. If you press 55, they will be notified and transfer the call to the police. If you don’t press 55, the call will be terminated.
The Silent Solution does not work on calls from a landline but if a call from a landline is received and there is no request for an emergency, the caller does not answer or only background noise can be heard and the operator cannot decide whether an emergency service is needed, the call will be directed to a police call handler.

Our call handers will try to communicate with you by asking simple yes or no questions. If you are not able to speak, listen carefully to the questions and instructions from the call handler so they can assess your call and arrange help if needed.

If you replace the handset, the landline may remain connected for 45 seconds in case you pick it up again. If, during this time, you do pick it up again and the operator is concerned for your safety, the call will be connected to police.

T/DCI Bilby added: “People should continue to report domestic abuse to us. Tackling it remains a key priority for us as a force. We are still here and we will do everything we can to support victims of domestic abuse, you are not alone.”

The Silent Solution can help you if speaking could put you or someone else in danger.
