Talk fostering to help change a child's life

Derbyshire residents are being invited to discover how they could start to change a child’s life forever, by going along to one of our fostering information events taking place over the next few weeks.

During January, February and March, our fostering staff will be at venues in Matlock, Buxton, Ripley and Chesterfield to ’Talk Fostering’ with anyone who would like to know more about giving a child a loving home.

Our Cabinet Member for Young People Councillor Alex Dale said:

"There’s a real need for more people to come forward and foster Derbyshire children in care. The number of children in our care has risen over the past 12 months, while the number of foster carers has begun to decline.

"The need is greater than ever to find new foster families and carers who can give children in care the stable home environment they need to turn their lives around. Foster care can be for long or short periods of time. However long it is, it can make a real difference to them.

"Our Talk Fostering events are an excellent way to take that first step to becoming a foster carer. Our staff can answer questions about the support and training foster carers receive, as well the allowance payments we make to help them meet the costs of looking after a child.

"Visitors to the information event can also talk to people who already foster children and can speak about the real-life and rewarding experiences they have had of taking a child in need into their home."

The Talk Fostering events take place at:

Tuesday 23 January 2018 between 5pm and 7pm, County Hall, Smedley Street West, Matlock DE4 3AG
Tuesday 6 February 2018 between 4pm and 6pm, Leisure Centre, Derby Road, Ripley DE5 3HR
Thursday 8 February 2018 between 3pm and 6pm, Devonshire Dome, Devonshire Road, Buxton SK17 6RY
Tuesday 27 February 2018 between 5pm and 7pm, Queen’s Park Leisure Centre, Boythorpe Road, Chesterfield S40 2ND
Thursday 15 March 2018 between 5pm and 7pm, Proact Stadium, Sheffield Road, Chesterfield S41 8NZ
Tuesday 20 March 2018 between 5pm and 7pm, County Hall, Smedley Street West, Matlock DE4 3AG

Foster carers need to be over 21 and can be single, married, straight, gay or transgender, from any ethnic origin, working or not, renting or homeowners.

The qualities needed to foster a child have been captured in a new short film made by our Donut Creative Arts Services (DCAS) with Derbyshire foster children and carers.
