THE RESURRECTION TAKES CENTRE STAGE IN BELPER
4th April 2015
Following the success in 2013 / 2014 of The Belper Passion Play, the Easter story is at the centre of the community again with the premier of THE RESURRECTION.
Set in the not too distant future, THE RESURRECTION picks up the story where the Belper Passion left off with Magdelene and Mary joining the pallbearers at the tomb.
The play then follows Jesus and his disciples during the next few dangerous days.
George Gunby, who co-produces the event with Churches Together In Belper, said “The churches felt that they would like to complete the story but in the vein of the original Belper Passion. Its the most difficult play I have ever written mainly because the Resurrection is the heatbeat of Christianity and I wanted to do it justice. The audience will decide whether I have succeeded or not.”
The event, which takes place on Saturday 4 April, involves almost 70 volunteers from community groups in Belper.
THE RESURRECTION begins outside HSBC (King Street) with The Walk Of Witness at 3pm. In previous years over 500 people have joined the parade up King Street, along Green Lane and into St. Peters Church where the play will begin at 4pm.
“We have some of the finest actors in Derbyshire performing. I am very fortunate that they want to get involved in what is a very powerful and emotive story. The cast ranges in their beliefs from devout Christians to agnostics and it is rewarding to see differences put aside and new friendships formed,” said George Gunby.
Dan Skidmore (Jesus), Sali Gresham (Magdelene) and Maggie Burns (Mary) reprise their roles. New faces include Megan Harman (Lilith) and Isobelle Grace Keith who, as Elizabeth, witnessed the execution and burial of Jesus twenty five years earlier. Also featured are members of Belper Musical Theatre. The original music was written and produced by Belper composer James Oldrini.
