1940s Home Front Weekend At The West Shed Museum, Midland Railway-Butterley, Ripley
7th June 2014 to 8th June 2014 (10:30 - 16:30 each day)
Join us to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings with a special 1940s themed weekend at the Midland Railway-Butterley. The historic railway Saloon no. 45000 - believed to have been used during wartime by Winston Churchill - will be on display for visitors to look inside and there will be displays about the special ‘D-Day’ planning train of June 1944. Other attractions include steam trains running, Second World War re-enactors, 1940’s music, NAAFI canteen, decorations, trade stalls and an RAF ‘Hurricane’ flypast (on 7th June only - subject to operational requirements). Re-enactors in 1940s dress are welcome and will be given a 50% discount on train tickets (but no AXIS power uniforms or regalia).
The event will be spread across the Midland Railway site and centred around The Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust - West Shed Museum at the Swanwick Junction site. Entrance to the West Shed Museum is FREE but access to the event in general is via train from the Midland Railway-Butterley Station.
The cost of train tickets (which last all day) varies from £10.00 to £15.50 per adult (discounts are available for the over 60s) and from £5.00 to £7.75 per child (age 5 to 16). Family tickets (2 adults and 3 children under 16 years old) are available from £25.00 to £38.75.
