Gold Card holders check your card

Derbyshire Gold Card holders are being urged to check their cards are valid ahead of the launch of new technology which will detect if a card has been cancelled.

From July 1 upgraded ticket machines on buses throughout the county will be able to identify invalid Gold Cards.

A card may be invalid because:

  • it has been reported lost or stolen

  • the cardholder has had multiple cards and is not using the most up-to-date card - the valid card is the one with the highest 13 digit number shown on the front of the card

  • the card has been used fraudulently

  • the cardholder no longer qualifies for free travel

  • Councillor Simon Spencer, Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Infrastructure, said:

“We know how important it is for people to retain their independence which is why free bus travel is of such benefit.

“But to continue to qualify for free bus travel Gold Card holders must make sure their cards are valid. Developments in technology mean bus ticket machines can now ‘read’ an electronic chip in the card and detect if it’s valid. If it’s not, passengers will be advised to request a new card and may be asked to pay a fare.”

New cards can be requested online or by getting in touch with the local district, borough or Derby City Council – the one where the cardholder pays Council Tax.

Cardholders who are unsure if their card is valid or not should also get in touch with their local council.

Gold Cards enable passengers to get free, off-peak travel on local buses throughout England. Off-peak travel is after 9.30am up to 11pm weekdays and any time at the weekend and on bank holidays.

Gold Card is also a Derbyshire and Derby city library card and entitles the cardholder to get discounts at around 700 local shops and on other services.
