Appeal issued and residents urged to be alert after cash is stolen from man in Matlock

Police are appealing for information and urging people to be alert after cash was stolen from an elderly man in Matlock.

At around 2pm on Friday, March 31, a man approached a 79-year-old man on Snitterton Road in Matlock and asked him for change.

As the victim took cash from his wallet and handed it to the suspect, the suspect pointed to one of the cards in his wallet and asked whether it was a phone card. The victim said no and the suspect walked away towards Matlock Town Centre.

The man became suspicious and checked his wallet to find that that a quantity of cash had been stolen.

The man was described as being of eastern European appearance, aged in his late 30s, bald, and wearing glasses. He had a roundish face and spoke with broken English.

This incident follows similar thefts over recent weeks in Matlock, Derby and across the Amber Valley, including Ripley, Heanor, Belper, and Alfreton.

Sergeant Andy Wordsworth, who oversees Safer Neighbourhood policing in the Matlock area, said: “These incidents have seen older people being targeted by thieves who have distracted the victims and stolen cash from their wallets, purses, or handbags.

“To help to prevent further victims of this type of crime, it is important that we are cautious if approached by a stranger in the street, and also that we share this information with relatives and friends who you think might be vulnerable to make them aware.”

Sergeant Wordsworth continued: “Make sure you are aware of your surroundings, and if you feel suspicious or even vulnerable if approached by a stranger asking for change, just say no and walk away.

“We are also advising people not to carry large sums of cash, to never leave valuables unattended, to keep belongings in a zipped pocket or bag and to use a purse chain if you have one.

“If anyone has seen anyone acting suspiciously, or has any information about these incidents then please contact us.”

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact PC Gary Ferguson on 101, quoting occurrence number 17000135326, or by sending him a message online.

You can also call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
