The Sails Turn again at Heage Windmill
Just 10 months after wet rot was discovered in major structural components of Heage windmill she is back in working order again! The sails turned freely for the first time yesterday and we hope to be milling flour again as soon as we have suitable winds.
Huge fund raising activities have resulted in over £56,000 being accumulated, which, with the mills own reserve will cover the anticipated cost of about £75,000! Our contractor, Traditional Millwrights, from Lincolnshire, have pulled out all the stops to replace the huge oak beams which had become unsafe. The final overall cost has been reduced because our own team of volunteers has taken on the major task of repairing and repainting the six sails, each of which weighs nearly one ton, and have also painted the cap, so the ’old Lady’ now gleams white (when we have some sun). Over 600 man hours have been expended by the volunteers in carrying out this work!
Piers Bostock, chairman of Heage Windmill Society said “I am delighted that the efforts of everyone involved has resulted in the mill being back in action so quickly. I am immensely proud of all the volunteers and thank them for their commitment and untiring efforts”.
